Class of 1974 conversation with Dean Bowser – Jan. 11, 2024

Dear Classmates,

Our 50th Reunion is only a few months away.  I would love to have a great turnout.  My hope is to see people I haven’t seen in years—people we lived with and shared our highs and lows, shared our secrets, and were part of our everyday life.  Not just those who graduated with us but those who transferred as well.

The college has planned a full schedule of events which can be seen in the enclosed brochure.  I just want to highlight a few things.  Friday evening is the Anna Young Club Dinner for classes who graduated at least 50 years ago.  This will be our inaugural year for the Anna Young dinner.  Immediately preceding the dinner, our class is planning a get-together (4-5:30).  The site has not been finalized, but it will be on campus.  Our class dinner will be Saturday evening (6:00 pm-10:00 pm) in Rebekah Scott Hall, Woltz-Garretson Great Room.

If you have special circumstances or needs, please contact me (ann.bibb@gmail.com or 678-429-7011).  If you have not joined our Facebook page, consider doing so (Agnes Scott College, Class of 1974).

Let’s make this our best reunion yet.  Reach out to your friends and encourage them to come.  It is so meaningful to hear from old friends who want to reconnect and catch up on the last 50 years.  It’s the people and relationships that make a reunion.  Let’s make ours memorable!

See you in April –
Ann Early Bibb
Reunion Chair

Fall President’s Letter

Dear Class of 1974,

September 1970 . . . 204 young women met on the Agnes Scott College campus as freshmen, ready to take on the world. Red was our class color, and we selected Mickey Mouse as our mascot. Four years later, 117 of us graduated from Agnes. Whether you graduated from Agnes Scott or not, we all share the common experience of our freshman year. Now, here we are, ready to celebrate 50 years later. How will we celebrate?

I hope we will celebrate by sharing our experiences from the last 50+ years and by reconnecting with women with whom we may have lost touch, but who were at one time in our lives very important to us. Ann Early Bibb, Betsy Bean Burrell, and I recently attended the Reunion Boot Camp at Agnes Scott. Being on campus again brought back a lot of memories.

Our 50th reunion kicks off on Friday, April 19, 2024, with the Anna Young dinner on campus. This dinner is for everyone celebrating their 50th (or more) reunion. You may remember the Anna Young Alumnae House, but you might not know that Anna Irwin Young was a professor of mathematics, physics, and astronomy at Agnes Scott. In 1916, she became a charter member of the Mathematical Association of America. Ann Early Bibb, our Reunion Chair, is planning a special time following the Anna Young dinner for us to reconnect with our classmates.

Saturday, we gather with all reunion classes for our processional to Presser followed by the alumnae luncheon.

Saturday evening, we will enjoy our reunion dinner in Rebekah. We are still in the planning stages. If you have ideas, feel free to reach out to Ann (ann.bibb@gmail.com) or me (tlee2997@gmail.com).

Mary Gay Bankston has served faithfully and tirelessly as our Fund Chairman. We are working on a special class challenge and hope that you will make a gift to help us celebrate our 50th reunion. We, as class officers, are also dedicated to improving our participation rates. When the college is seeking grant money from corporations and foundations, the number of alums giving is a key consideration. Participation rates are an indicator of the value alums place on the education they received from the school. Last year 35 from our class contributed to the Annual Fund. We would love to have 74 contribute this year in honor of our graduation year. This goal is about participation―any dollar amount counts! Please consider making a financial contribution. Your gift needs to be made by April 11 in order to be included in our goals for this year.

Thank you for sending class news to Ann Patterson Clites. It is such a valuable tool for staying connected. We are hoping to develop a directory for our 50th reunion. I have the directory that Mercedes made for our 35th reunion, and I also have one made for our 30th, though I do not see an “author” listed. I apologize if there were others I failed to mention. We need help in developing the framework for this initiative. Please contact Ann Early Bibb or me if you are interested in working on the directory.

This is a link to the Agnes Scott Alumnae Weekend page where information about our reunion can be found: Agnes Scott Alumnae Weekend–A weekend of opportunities to reconnect with classmates and your alma mater. We also have a Facebook page for our class. Currently, there are 51 members in the group. If you would like to be added, please contact Ann Patterson Clites at annclites52@gmail.com.

I hope you will give serious consideration to joining us for our 50th. It will not happen again!
